Temperature Control Units

Used Temperature Control Units for Die Casting Dies
A constant die temperature is the foundation of a stable die casting process.

Temperature control units heat die casting dies to their required operating temperature and keep the thermal balance within a controlled range during production. This helps to control die filling, solidification, component quality and cycle time more reliably.

FISS Machines offers used water and oil temperature control units, pressurised-water units, single- and multi-circuit units as well as mobile cooling and temperature control systems. Selection depends not only on the maximum flow temperature, but also on heating and cooling capacity, flow rate, pressure, number of circuits and the existing die channels.

Constant
Die Temperature
Heating Bring the die to operating temperature in a controlled way.
Circulation Move the temperature-control medium reliably through the channels.
Cooling Remove excess process heat in a controlled manner.
Control Monitor flow and return temperatures and compensate for deviations.

Temperature control is a closed thermal circuit

During every casting cycle, the die absorbs heat from the molten metal. The temperature control unit transfers heat to the die or removes it again. The goal is not the lowest possible die temperature, but a reproducible thermal balance.

Areas that are too cold can impair die filling. Excessive or strongly fluctuating temperatures can affect both the die and component quality. Flow rate, heating capacity, cooling and control must therefore be matched to the die, alloy and cycle.

Water or oil?

The temperature-control medium determines the usable temperature range, response behaviour and the requirements placed on pumps, seals, hoses and die channels.

Water
High heat transfer

Water-based units provide effective heat transfer and fast response behaviour. Closed pressurised-water systems can be used for higher operating temperatures.

Operating pressure, water quality, corrosion protection, scaling, pump performance and the pressure resistance of the die channels are important factors.
Oil
For higher temperature ranges

Oil temperature control units are used when the required flow temperature exceeds the usual water range or when low-pressure, high-temperature operation is required.

The condition of the heat-transfer oil, pumps, heating elements, seals, expansion tank, cooling concept and possible thermal deposits should be checked.

Which specifications must match the die and casting process?

The model designation alone says little about suitability. A used temperature control unit should be selected according to its actual thermal capacity, hydraulic circuit and the planned process conditions.

Temperature range Maximum flow temperature, permissible return temperature and required control accuracy must match the die concept.
Heating capacity The installed heating capacity influences heat-up time and restart performance after production interruptions.
Cooling capacity Direct or indirect cooling must remove sufficient heat without causing strong temperature fluctuations.
Flow rate and pressure Pump, flow rate and operating pressure must reliably overcome flow resistance, hose lengths and die channels.
Number of circuits Single-circuit units are suitable for straightforward applications. Multi-circuit units can supply and control different die zones separately.
Media connections Connection sizes, couplings, hose material, return-flow monitoring and existing infrastructure must be compatible.

What stable die temperature control achieves in daily production

Good temperature control does not solve every casting issue, but it creates consistent thermal conditions for a reproducible process.

More consistent casting quality

A stable thermal balance supports consistent die filling and solidification. Dimensional variations, surface defects and thermally induced scrap can therefore be reduced.

More predictable cycle times

When the die and temperature-control circuit reach their intended condition more quickly after production starts, the process can stabilise sooner. Restarting after interruptions is also easier.

Reduced thermal stress

Controlled temperature distribution reduces extreme local temperature changes. This can lower thermal stress on the die and create the basis for a longer die service life.

The temperature control unit is part of the complete cold chamber die casting cell

Die temperature control works together with metal dosing, die spraying, robot handling and machine parameters. A temperature control unit should therefore not be evaluated in isolation, but in relation to the die, die casting machine and existing automation.

What to check when buying a used temperature control unit

In addition to manufacturer and year of manufacture, condition, actual performance data, system tightness and compatibility with the existing die circuit should be checked.

Medium and design: water, pressurised water, heat-transfer oil, mobile cooling or combined configuration
Maximum flow temperature, heating capacity, cooling capacity and control accuracy
Flow rate, pump pressure, number of circuits and suitability for the die channels
Condition of pump, heating elements, heat exchanger, valves, seals and expansion tank
System tightness and condition of hoses, couplings, filters and connections
Control system, temperature sensors, flow monitoring, alarms and interfaces to the die casting cell
Maintenance condition, operating hours, service records, wiring diagrams and spare parts availability
Electrical connection, cooling-water supply, installation space, transport and commissioning

Inspection and refurbishment

Depending on their condition, used temperature control units can be technically inspected, cleaned, resealed or refurbished. Typical work includes pumps, heaters, valves, heat exchangers, hoses, sensors, control systems and electrical components.

Integration into production

Before commissioning, the medium, hose routing, die connections, cooling-water supply and control interfaces should be coordinated. With multi-circuit units, clear allocation of the individual die zones is also important.

Used temperature control units from established manufacturers

FISS Machines trades used temperature control units and mobile cooling systems from various manufacturers. Depending on availability, units from Robamat, Thermobiehl, Tool-Temp, Regloplas, Single, Lethiguel and other manufacturers may be considered.

Buy used temperature control units

FISS supports the selection of a suitable unit, technical clarification, condition assessment, transport and coordination of the necessary connections for the die casting cell.

Sell temperature control units

FISS supports the evaluation and international marketing of used temperature control units. In addition to brokerage and international marketing, direct purchase by FISS may also be an option depending on the project.
